Prosecutors of the Drohobych District Prosecutor’s Office have sent an indictment to the court regarding a 45-year-old man who tried to sell an archaeological find.
The investigation found that in March 2025, in the Boryslav area near the Tysmenytsia River, a local resident discovered an artifact. It concerns a silver fibula-brooch with a gilded surface from the second half of the 5th century, which according to the law is considered a treasure. Subsequently, the accused posted the find for sale on an online auction.
According to current legislation, archaeological monuments cannot be the subjects of sale, private collection, or export abroad. The man is charged with the illegal appropriation of a found treasure that has particular historical, scientific, artistic, or cultural value (part 1 of article 193 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
At present, this unique archaeological find has been seized and transferred to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine for safekeeping. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the Drohobych District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Lviv Region.
Note: according to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in a legal manner and established by a court conviction.
