
In Lviv, on Liubinska Street, a statue of the Virgin Mary was damaged. Police officers have identified the man involved in the offence, and a pre-trial investigation is under way.
A report of damage to the sculpture was received on the emergency line 102 today, 13 August. An investigative team from Police Department No.1 of Lviv District Police Administration No.2 attended the scene.
Law enforcement officers established that the statue of the Virgin Mary had been drawn on with a black felt-tip pen and the flowers at its base had been broken. In the course of the measures carried out, police officers found that the hooligan actions had been committed by a 46-year-old resident of Lviv.
Investigators of the territorial police unit, under the procedural supervision of the Frankivsk District Prosecutor’s Office, have opened criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (hooliganism). The sanction of the article provides for punishment in the form of a fine ranging from one to two thousand tax-free minimum incomes of citizens, or probation supervision for up to five years, or restriction of liberty for the same term.
At present, a decision is being made as to whether to notify the suspect of the charges, and a pre-trial investigation is under way.
