23-year-old participant in disturbances detained in Lviv for assaulting police officer

In Lviv, following the disturbances that occurred during the night of 8–9 July on Chervonoi Kalyny Avenue, law enforcement officers detained a 23-year-old local resident, who is considered to be one of the active participants in the events. This was reported under the procedural guidance of the Frankivsk District Prosecutor’s Office of the city of Lviv.

According to the investigation, during the police attempt to stop the unlawful actions and stabilise the situation, the man, engaging in hooligan behaviour, used a gas spray against police officers and also inflicted bodily injuries on the deputy head of one of Lviv’s district police departments. As a result of the attack, the law enforcement officer sustained head injuries.

The offender was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. A decision is currently being made on notifying him of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 296 (hooliganism), Part 2 of Article 345 (violence against a law enforcement officer) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and on the choice of a preventive measure.

The Prosecutor’s Office recalls that during the incident involving servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, police officers and around 200 civilians, the vehicle of servicemen of the Sykhiv District Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Centre was blocked, damaged and overturned. During the police attempt to stop the unlawful actions, some participants offered resistance.

These facts are being investigated in pre-trial criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 114-1 (obstruction of the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a special period), Part 4 of Article 296 (hooliganism) and Part 2 of Article 345 (violence against a law enforcement officer) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Investigative actions are ongoing, and other individuals involved in the unlawful actions are being identified. The investigation is being conducted by Police Department No. 2 of Lviv District Police Directorate No. 2 of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Lviv Region and by the Security Service of Ukraine Office in Lviv Region.

Pursuant to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and may not be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt has been proven in the manner prescribed by law and established by a guilty verdict of a court.
