Man killed taxi driver because he had no money to pay fare – sentenced to 13 years in prison
Following a public prosecution by prosecutors of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a 30-year-old man was found guilty of premeditated murder, illegal seizure of a vehicle and intentional destruction of property by arson (Article 115(1), Article 289(1), Article 194(2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
He was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
It was established that at the end of June 2012, the accused used the services of a 27-year-old taxi driver to get from the centre of Lviv to a village outside the city. During the trip, a conflict arose between them, which was caused by the passenger’s refusal to pay the full fare. When the taxi driver drove the defendant to his destination, instead of giving the money he had promised the driver, the defendant pulled out a gun and shot him in the head.
Subsequently, in order to hide the traces of the crime, the defendant buried the body, burned the car and personal belongings of the victim.
For a long time, the accused was hiding from the investigation. In January 2020, thanks to the coordinated actions of law enforcement officers, he was detained.
The man will be in custody until the verdict comes into force.
The pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region.
The court verdict will come into force after the expiration of the appeal period.
