The Hrybovychi Landfill is successfully undergoing the final phase of the second stage of rehabilitation. The works are 90% complete, including the formation of a comprehensive landfill protection system and the installation of drainage layers over more than 173,000 square metres. According to representatives of the Lviv Municipal Enterprise ‘Green City’, the next step will be the creation of a recreational space.
Over 31,000 cubic metres of drainage material have already been used, and more than 34 hectares of land have been prepared for landscaping. Specialists emphasise the importance of working with the leachate — old storage ponds that had become environmental risks have been completely drained. The biogas collection system aids in converting it into electricity, reducing emissions.
LME ‘Green City’ notes that all work is proceeding according to plan. In the final stage, the landfill will be covered with soil and landscaping will be completed over 20 hectares. Following this, the area will be transformed into a recreational space. Given favourable weather conditions, the second phase is expected to be completed by the end of June.
This comprehensive set of restorative measures is aimed at eliminating sources of negative environmental impact, ensuring the stable condition of accumulated waste, and minimising ecological risks. The Lviv Solid Waste Landfill was in operation for nearly 60 years, accumulating 14.3 million tonnes of waste. Rehabilitation work began in September 2020 and has proceeded in two phases, including the restoration of adjacent areas.
