Historic cobblestones uncovered during repairs on Heroes of the UPA Street in Lviv to be catalogued

During emergency resurfacing works on Heroes of the UPA Street in Lviv, road workers uncovered historic cobblestones beneath the asphalt layer in three locations. The discovery was reported by Lviv’s First Deputy Mayor, Andriy Moskalenko.

The cobblestones were found on the section from S. Bandera Street to Vasylkivskyi Street, in spots adjoining neighbouring streets. As a result, work has been temporarily halted to determine the next technical solution. According to Andriy Moskalenko, the uncovered surface will be removed, catalogued and put into storage for future use in repairs on other streets where such material is needed. The official noted that this temporary halt will not affect the timeframe for completing the works.

The Frankivsk District Administration clarified that on the section from S. Bandera Street to Vasylkivskyi Street, the old asphalt has already been completely milled off. Once the cobblestones have been removed, a new sub-base will be installed and the contractor will then begin asphalting.

Repairs on Heroes of the UPA Street began on 19 May and are divided into three stages: from S. Bandera Street to Vasylkivskyi Street, then on to Smal-Stotskyi Street, and finally from Smal-Stotskyi Street to Kulparkivska Street. For the duration of the works, the street has been completely closed to public and private traffic.

Public transport is running on diverted routes. In particular, trolleybus No. 22 “Universytet — Avtovokzal” and No. 30 “Universytet — Riashivska” are operating via St Yuri Square, Sheptytskykh Street, Kropyvnytskyi Square, Horodotska Street and Kulparkivska Street. Bus No. 7 “Horynia Street — Chyhyrynska Street” is running via Horodotska Street (Suburban Station) and Kulparkivska Street, while route No. 33 “Sichovykh Striltsiv Street — I. Puliui Street” has been diverted via St Yuri Square, Metropolitan Andrey Street, S. Bandera Street, Kropyvnytskyi Square, Horodotska Street and Kulparkivska Street. This diversion scheme for public transport will remain in place throughout the entire period of the works.

The diversion for private vehicles has been organised via Horodotska Street or via Rusovykh–Kyivska Street. The repair works are being carried out by the contractor Onur, with deferred payment.

In Lviv, all cobblestones removed during roadworks are catalogued and, under transfer and acceptance certificates, taken to municipal company depots. The stone may only be released for further use by decision of the executive committee or a resolution of the council. Currently, the city has 21,092.42 m² of cobblestones, 1,166.42 m² of mosaic paving and 702.70 linear metres of kerb stone in storage.
