Reconstruction of Mazepa Street Begins in Lviv

In Lviv, the reconstruction of an important arterial street in the Shevchenkivskyi district — Mazepa Street — is beginning. This is one of the city’s key infrastructure projects, aimed at improving accessibility to nearby medical facilities, including the UNBROKEN rehabilitation centre.

The plan is to widen the carriageway, establish two dedicated lanes and island stops for public transport, convenient infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, parking spaces, and green areas. The works are being carried out with financial support from the European Investment Bank. They will commence on the section from Mykolaichuka Street to Orlyka Street — currently without closing the road to traffic.

“Currently, Mazepa Street has two wide lanes for traffic, while the infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists is either absent or in poor condition. Therefore, after the reconstruction, the entire length of Mazepa Street will have 4 lanes for traffic — 2 lanes in each direction with separate lanes for public transport, island stops, cycle paths, and cycle lanes. We will also provide parking spaces and greenery,” says Oleh Zabarilo, Director of the Department of Urban Mobility and Street Infrastructure.

According to him, there are currently 12 bus routes and trolleybus No. 33 operating on Mazepa Street. Thus, the total number of public transport vehicles using this street daily is about 150 units. Therefore, prioritising public transport here is very important.

As reported by Mykola Vlasiuk, Director of LKP “Lvivavtodor”, the reconstruction of Mazepa Street will take place along the entire length of the street — from the Spartak shopping centre to Hrinchenka Street — a distance of 1.94 km. However, to minimise inconvenience for pedestrians and drivers, the works have been divided into three stages: Stage I — from the intersection with Mykolaichuka Street to Orlyka Street, Stage II — from Orlyka Street to the Spartak shopping centre, Stage III — from Mykolaichuka Street to Hrinchenka Street.

The reconstruction works on Mazepa Street are being carried out with financial support from the European Investment Bank. Specifically, the EIB is allocating 10.7 million euros for these works. This project also includes the reconstruction of Hrinchenka Street. According to the contract, the works on these two streets are to be completed within 18 months.
