Why does this matter? Due to a recent accident, 44-year-old Lviv resident Yuriy Pyrih narrowly escaped a deadly danger. Following an explosion, when he unwisely stayed at home during an air raid alert, a 10-centimetre glass shard became lodged in his lungs.
Fortunately, surgeons at St Luke’s Hospital successfully performed an operation using a minimally invasive technique to prevent further injury. This approach allowed them to visualise the exact location of the shard and remove it, stopping the bleeding and restoring the lung’s integrity.
The incident occurred during an air attack when Yuriy decided to stay at home in the Sykhiv District with his daughter. Hearing the approach of drones, he stepped onto the balcony where he fell victim to shards following an explosion. Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported him to the hospital for urgent intervention.
After the successful extraction of the shard, Yuriy is already home and urges others to adhere to safety rules during air raid alerts, emphasising the importance of shelters.
