Six-year-old Makar from Volyn Undergoes Complex Surgery

Six-year-old Makar from Volyn underwent one of the most complex neurosurgical operations — a hemispherectomy. This intervention was the only chance to save the boy from a severe form of epilepsy that hindered his life and development.

Makar has been ill since birth due to brain damage during traumatic childbirth. His development differs from his peers, but his parents have been doing everything possible for their son from day one: regular consultations with specialists, treatment, rehabilitation.

Just when it seemed the child’s condition was stabilising, a new challenge arose — Makar began experiencing epileptic seizures. Video-EEG examination revealed numerous pathological foci in the left hemisphere of the brain, posing a threat to the boy’s health and life.

Initially, doctors prescribed medication therapy, but the seizures continued, and the number of foci increased. An MRI of the brain revealed significant damage to the left hemisphere. In such cases, the only solution remains radical surgical intervention.

“The essence of hemispherectomy is the removal or functional disconnection of one of the brain’s hemispheres. It is used to treat severe epilepsy when the pathology affects only one hemisphere,” explained Mykhailo Lovga, head of the Children’s Neurosurgery Clinic.

After the operation, Makar spent several days in the hospital under medical supervision and then returned home. According to Mykhailo Lovga, it will take him about a month to fully recover from the intervention. The main goal — to stop the seizures — was achieved immediately, which greatly pleases both the parents and the doctors.
