Stroke Ward Update at Lviv Hospital

The Yuriy Lypa Lviv Regional Hospital for War Veterans and Repressed Persons has reopened its renovated stroke ward after major repairs.

From now on, patients with strokes and acute neurological conditions will receive care with the use of modern equipment and in more comfortable conditions. The hospital’s stroke ward is located on the eighth floor, and its renovation began at the end of 2024, costing more than 38.5 million UAH from the regional budget.

As part of the project, a modern ventilation and medical gas system was installed, barrier-free access for persons with disabilities was provided, and modern equipment was purchased and installed. Notably, a computer encephalograph, 20 patient monitors, 20 syringe infusion pumps, 20 medical aspirators, electrocardiographs, biphasic defibrillators, enteral feeding pumps, and new medical furniture were included.

“This is one of the most strategic directions of our institution’s work. We treat up to 600 strokes a year. This year, we forecast no less than 800. Our stroke block — that is, the intensive care unit — has 20 beds. There are also rooms for more stable patients and premises for medical staff. At any one time, we treat no less than 60 patients, about 20 of whom have strokes,” said the acting general director of the hospital, Volodymyr Krasokha.

Last year, more than 200 million from the regional budget were allocated for repairs in the veterans’ hospital. “Over the past three years, major repairs of the reception, surgical, and neurosurgical departments, as well as the departments of arthrology and vertebrology, have been completed here. Angiographic systems have been set up, buildings have been insulated, a ‘warm box’ for ambulance vehicles has been installed, new elevators have been put in, a rehabilitation center has been created, and the roofs of the main building and one of the blocks have been replaced, among other things. At least 600 million hryvnias from the regional budget have been allocated for this hospital. This year we continue infrastructure and energy efficiency projects. Together with the Superhumans center, we are working on the announced creation of a hearing center,” acting head of the Lviv Regional Council Yuriy Kholod noted.

In 2025, no less than 106 million hryvnias from the regional budget is allocated for the hospital. The insulation of facades, major repairs of another operating block, anesthesiology and intensive care departments, replacement of engineering networks, and reconstruction of the power supply system with the installation of a hybrid solar power plant on the medical facility’s roof are in progress.

It should be noted that an additional 35.27 million euros for the renewal of the regional hospital in Vynnyky are provided under the European Union’s Ukraine Facility financial support program. This includes grants, state guarantees, and loans from the Czech government, which were announced by the Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Liashko during an international forum in April this year.
