Doctors in Lviv continue to save lives. For more than 4 years, hundreds of operations have been performed at the Transplantation Centre of the First Medical Association of Lviv, giving people a chance for a healthy and fulfilling life. And a third of these transplants came from related donors.
“First of all, a person who decides to become a donor for a related transplant must be of legal age and capacity. Donors can be first-line relatives – siblings, parents, and their own children. Second-line donors are grandparents, grandchildren, uncles and aunts, nieces and nephews.
A husband or wife can also become a donor after immunological tests have been carried out and positive results are obtained. Usually, when choosing a donor, they look not so much at the age as at the functional capacity of the organ that will work in the recipient’s body,” explains the Transplantation Centre of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
As a reminder, Lviv is one of the leaders in Ukrainian transplantation. The first transplant was performed here in February 2020. Since then, doctors have performed more than 400 organ transplants. These include hearts, livers and kidneys, as well as lungs. It was here that the first pancreas and kidney transplant in Ukraine was performed, as well as the first heart-lung transplant in Ukraine and a successful split liver transplant.
