
On Saturday, 22 August, a city farewell ceremony will be held in Lviv for servicemen Vasyl Boliukh and Andrii Buchko, who were killed while defending Ukraine from the Russian occupiers. The city authorities have called on residents to join the farewell and to refrain at this time from entertainment events and celebrations.
The funeral service will begin at 11:00 at the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. At approximately 11:30 a citywide farewell ceremony is planned on Rynok Square. The defenders will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery, in the Field of Honourable Burials No. 87 on Pasichna Street.
Vasyl Boliukh (01.04.1978 — 14.08.2026) was born in the village of Sudylkiv in Khmelnytskyi region. He studied at the Sudylkiv Lyceum of the Sudylkiv Village Council of Shepetivka district, and later qualified as an electric welder at the Shepetivka Vocational Lyceum. He worked as an installer at the limited liability company “RS-Bezpeka”, where he was highly valued by his colleagues.
His family remember Vasyl as a kind, sincere, exceptionally sensitive person and a responsible family man who always supported his loved ones and enjoyed travelling, cooking and animals. In 2026 he took up arms to defend Ukraine from the Russian invasion. He served in the Zaporizhzhia sector with the 225th Separate Assault Regiment of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Vasyl Boliukh is survived by his wife, son, mother, two sisters and other relatives.
Andrii Buchko (08.01.1970 — 20.08.2026) was originally from the village of Pidhaitsy in Lviv region. He graduated from the Pidhaitsy General Secondary Education Institution of Levels I–II of the Hlyniany City Council of Lviv district, after which he studied at a vocational school in Lviv. He completed compulsory military service and worked in the construction sector for private companies.
According to his family, Andrii was sociable, active, well-read and friendly; he loved spending time in nature, fishing, singing and cooking. In 2025 he joined the ranks of Ukraine’s defenders, safeguarding its territorial integrity and sovereignty in the Luhansk sector as part of the 3rd Border Detachment named after Hero of Ukraine Colonel Yevhenii Pikus of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Andrii Buchko is survived by his wife, two sons, sister and other family members.
