On 23 May, Lviv will bid farewell to Ukraine’s defenders

On 23 May, Lviv will hold a farewell ceremony for servicemen Mykola Pohlod, Oleksii Oleksyn and Oleh Slipak, who gave their lives defending Ukraine from the Russian occupiers. The city authorities are asking Lviv residents and visitors to join the ceremony and to refrain at this time from entertainment events and celebrations.

The funeral service will begin at 11:00 at the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. At approximately 11:30, a citywide farewell ceremony will be held on Rynok Square.

Oleksii Oleksyn will be laid to rest at Lychakiv Cemetery in the Field of Honourable Burials No. 87 (Pasichna Street), and Mykola Pohlod at Riasnianske Cemetery (Lukasevycha Street). The farewell to Oleh Slipak will continue at the Church of the Entry of the Most Holy Mother of God of the UGCC in the village of Mshana, after which the warrior will be buried at the local cemetery.

Oleksii Oleksyn (30.04.1981 — 21.02.2025) was a native of Lviv. He studied at Secondary School No. 40 in Lviv and at the Lviv Physics and Mathematics Boarding Lyceum at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. He worked as an electrician in private companies. In 2023, he took up arms to defend Ukraine, serving in the 36th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Mykhailo Bilynskyi of the Ukrainian Navy on the Southern Slobozhanskyi, Northern Slobozhanskyi and Kherson fronts. He was awarded the medal “War Veteran”. He is survived by his mother, son, brother, three sisters, nephews and extended family.

Mykola Pohlod (20.12.1994 — 12.05.2026) was born in the town of Novyi Rozdil, Lviv region. He graduated from Novyi Rozdil General Secondary Education Support Institution I–III Degrees No. 5 and obtained the professions of motor vehicle repair fitter and manual arc welder at the Novyi Rozdil Vocational Lyceum. With the onset of the full-scale invasion, he joined the 101st Separate Territorial Defence Brigade of the Territorial Defence Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and fought on the Kursk, Donetsk and Northern Slobozhanskyi fronts. He was awarded the medal “For Participation in Combat. Bakhmut Line” and the honorary badge “For Courage and Steadfastness in the Battles of the Kursk Hell”. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, parents and brother.

Oleh Slipak (01.04.1982 — 20.05.2026) was a native of Lviv. He studied at the Vasyl Symonenko Lyceum of the Lviv City Council and at the Technical Vocational College of Lviv Polytechnic National University. He worked as a car mechanic in private companies. In 2025, he joined the 80th Separate Air Assault Galician Brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He is survived by his mother, daughter, brother with his family and extended family.
