
On Monday, 6 July, Lviv will hold a farewell ceremony for servicemen Volodymyr Marushchak and Mykhailo Kundyk, who were killed defending Ukraine from the Russian occupiers. The city authorities are calling on residents and visitors of Lviv to join the ceremony and to refrain from entertainment activities at this time.
The funeral service for the soldiers will begin at 11:00 at the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. At approximately 11:30, a citywide farewell ceremony will be held on Rynok Square. Mykhailo Kundyk will be buried in the field of honourable burials No. 87 of Lychakiv Cemetery on Pasichna Street, and Volodymyr Marushchak at the Sykhiv Cemetery.
Volodymyr Marushchak (19.02.1987 — 02.07.2026) was a Lviv native. He studied at Lviv Secondary School I–III Levels No. 82 of Lviv City Council, and later graduated from Lviv University of Trade and Economics with an educational and professional programme in “Customs Affairs”.
He devoted his professional career to the customs service: he served at the Shehyni — Medyka checkpoint of the Mostyska customs post of Lviv Customs of the State Customs Service of Ukraine, and in 2014 carried out his duties at a customs post in Kherson. Later, he worked at the State Enterprise “Lviv International Airport named after Danylo Halytskyi”.
According to his family, Volodymyr was generous, caring and sociable, always ready to help. He was passionate about chess, held the title of Master of Sport, took part in international tournaments, read a great deal of specialised literature, constantly honing his skills and teaching children to play chess. He also loved fishing and spending time in nature.
With the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he joined the ranks of the defenders. He defended the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine in the Luhansk sector as part of the 3rd Border Detachment named after Hero of Ukraine Colonel Yevhen Pikus of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. For his service, he was honoured with numerous awards. Volodymyr Marushchak is survived by his parents, wife, daughter, extended family, friends and comrades-in-arms.
Mykhailo Kundyk (08.04.1979 — 19.03.2025) was originally from the village of Savchyn in Lviv Region. He studied at Savchyn Secondary School I–III Levels of Sokal City Council of Lviv Region, and qualified as a 6th-grade plumbing and heating engineer at the State Vocational Educational Institution “Slavuta Vocational Lyceum”.
After completing his studies, Mykhailo worked abroad as a plumber. His relatives remember him as a kind, sincere, sensitive and hardworking person, cheerful and full of life, who easily found common ground with those around him and genuinely loved people. He was a loving husband and caring father, devoted much attention to his family, and enjoyed cooking and spending time in nature.
When the full-scale war began, he took up arms to defend Ukraine. He defended the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state in the Southern-Slobozhanske and Donetsk sectors as part of the 72nd Separate Mechanised Brigade named after the Black Zaporozhians of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Mykhailo Kundyk is survived by his wife, two sons, five sisters, five brothers with their families, godparents, godchildren, relatives, friends and comrades-in-arms.
