
On Monday, 29 June, a city farewell ceremony will be held in Lviv for servicemen Vasyl Mazur, Roman Horiachyi and Andrii Buchak, who were killed defending Ukraine from the Russian occupiers. The city authorities are calling on Lviv residents and visitors to join the farewell and to refrain from entertainment events at this time.
The funeral service for the soldiers will begin at 10:00 at the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. At around 10:30, a citywide farewell ceremony is planned on Rynok Square. Andrii Buchak will be buried at Lychakiv Cemetery in the Field of Honourable Burials No. 87 on Pasichna Street, and Vasyl Mazur at Riasnianske Cemetery on Lukasevycha Street. The farewell to Roman Horiachyi will continue at 12:00 at the Church of St Michael the Archangel in the village of Volia-Vysotska of the Zhovkva territorial community, after which he will be buried at the local cemetery.
Vasyl Mazur (11.08.1987 — 22.04.2026) was a native of Lviv. He studied at Secondary School No. 100 in Lviv and later qualified as an electrician at the Lviv Vocational School. He worked for private companies in the energy sector. His family remember him as a fair, responsible, determined and caring person, distinguished by his kindness and readiness to help. He was passionate about cars, automotive mechanics and fishing.
After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he joined Ukraine’s defence forces. He served on the Southern-Slobozhanske axis with the 24th Separate Mechanised Brigade named after King Danylo of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the Donetsk axis with the 80th Separate Air Assault Halychyna Brigade of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and on the Northern-Slobozhanske axis with the 42nd Separate Mechanised Brigade named after Hero of Ukraine Valerii Hudz of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Vasyl Mazur is survived by his mother, wife, two sons, brother and other relatives.
Roman Horiachyi (02.12.1976 — 21.06.2026) was also born in Lviv. He graduated from Secondary School No. 21 and trained as a dental technician at the professional college of the higher education municipal institution of the Lviv Regional Council “Lviv Medical Academy named after Andrei Krupynskyi”. He later obtained a higher education at the Lviv State University of Life Safety, specialising in “Fire Safety”.
He completed compulsory military service, worked as a dental technician at Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University, and served as a firefighter in the 17th State Fire and Rescue Unit of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Lviv Region. Later he worked as a driver-bodyguard at LLC “Economic Security Agency “Effort”” and LLC “Sparta-Zakhid”. His family describe him as a kind, courageous, honest, hard-working and responsible man with a good sense of humour, a loving husband, father and son. In his free time he did sport and was interested in cars and gardening.
Roman was a participant in the Anti-Terrorist Operation. With the start of the full-scale war, he again took up the defence of Ukraine. He fought for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state on the Southern-Slobozhanske axis with the 24th Separate Mechanised Brigade named after King Danylo, on the Northern-Slobozhanske axis with the 42nd Separate Mechanised Brigade named after Hero of Ukraine Valerii Hudz, and on the Donetsk axis with the 80th Separate Air Assault Halychyna Brigade. For his service he was awarded the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine’s “Badge of Honour”. Roman Horiachyi is survived by his wife, mother, two sons and family.
Andrii Buchak (23.11.1981 — 12.08.2024) was originally from Luhansk. He studied at the Luhansk Educational Complex “Specialised Primary School — Gymnasium No. 30” and qualified as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant at Vocational School No. 16 in Luhansk. He obtained his higher education at the Luhansk branch of the Institute of Postgraduate Education of the Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture, specialising in “Enterprise Economics”.
He worked as an economist at state and private enterprises. According to his family, Andrii was kind, sincere, open and calm, non-confrontational and always ready to support others. He loved chess, reading, travelling and hiking in the mountains with a tent.
In 2015 he did military service with military unit A3066 of the National Guard of Ukraine. After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, he again joined the defence forces. He served on the Southern-Slobozhanske, Donetsk and Luhansk axes with the 125th Separate Heavy Mechanised Brigade of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For his bravery and service he was awarded the Order of the President of Ukraine “For Courage” Third Class, the distinction of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine “Golden Cross”, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine medal “For Wounds”, the “Territorial Defence Forces Cross” distinction and the “War Veteran” medal. Andrii Buchak is survived by his wife, friends, family and comrades-in-arms.
