The Security Service of Ukraine has located debris from a Russian ballistic missile used in a strike on the Lviv region during the night of January 8–9, 2026. Preliminary analysis indicates that the recovered parts belong to the “Oreshnik” missile complex.
The following components were discovered at the site:
- a stabilization and guidance unit (essentially the missile’s “brain”);
- parts of the propulsion system;
- elements of the missile’s orientation mechanism;
- nozzles from the separation stage platform.
These fragments have been classified as physical evidence and are being prepared for in-depth forensic analysis.
According to SBU investigators, the missile was launched from Russia’s Kapustin Yar test site. The “Oreshnik” is a medium-range ground-to-ground ballistic missile.
By targeting civilian infrastructure in a region bordering the European Union, the Kremlin aimed to disrupt essential services during a period of severe weather conditions.
The use of such weaponry against civilian infrastructure is being classified as a war crime under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The SBU continues its pre-trial investigation under the procedural guidance of the Office of the Prosecutor General. Authorities are working to identify all individuals responsible for organizing and carrying out this attack so they can be held accountable under Ukrainian and international law.
