Veterans in Sokolnyky, Lviv region, received new archery equipment as part of BE STRONG’s inclusive rehabilitation project

In the village of Sokolnyky, Lviv region, the NGO BE STRONG presented newly acquired archery equipment that will enhance its inclusive sports space designed for the physical and emotional rehabilitation of veterans. The project was one of 20 winners in the nationwide grant competition “Time to Act. The Unstoppable”.

This initiative is co-funded and supported by:

  • The State Agency for Mass Sports of Ukraine,
  • The Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine (as part of the President’s “Active Parks” program),
  • The Fedir Shpyh Foundation,
  • The MHP-Gromadi Charity Foundation, within the veteran reintegration program MHP Poruch.

With this support, BE STRONG upgraded its sports base, purchasing a basic archery kit worth UAH 400,000. The inclusive facility allows veterans, including those with disabilities, to safely recover their physical health and improve emotional wellbeing among comrades.

Key project outcomes:

  1. An adaptive gym was equipped for individuals with various physical capabilities.
  2. Professional archery gear was acquired.
  3. An open training session was held to showcase the equipment.
  4. The organization expanded its capacity to hold training and competitions.

BE STRONG founder Yevhen Lukashchuk emphasized that the team is steadily developing sports infrastructure for veterans. Archery became the next logical step, supported by partner organizations. The equipment will be used both for regular training and national competitions such as BESTRONG GAMES, held for two consecutive years.

“Archery is currently one of the most popular adaptive sports among veterans,” noted Yevhen Lukashchuk.

Social impact and the role of adaptive sports:

  • According to Yehor Alekseienko, head of adaptive sports at the State Agency for Mass Sports, adaptive sports are not just about equipment, but also about creating a space for recovery and building new relationships.
  • Ulyana Baranova, head of social development at the MHP-Gromadi Foundation, stressed the importance of community: “Such spaces help people find friends and a sense of belonging, which directly impacts mental health.”

Personal story: Vadym Hilchuk

Vadym Hilchuk, a veteran of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, lost both legs in combat in 2023. After prosthetics and a long rehabilitation, he joined BE STRONG as a coach. He now professionally trains in bench press and helps others regain control of their bodies.

“I started sports rehab in the hospital. It’s one of the few things that helps shift focus after war. Through sports, you connect with others and find your path forward,” shared Vadym.

During the event, veterans conducted an open training session to demonstrate how the newly acquired archery equipment and adaptive machines will be used in future training programs.
