Tomorrow, October 20, Lviv will say goodbye to four Heroes. Dmytro Fialka, Mykhailo Ivanikiv, Roman Chaban and Ihor Marchenko died in the battle with the Russian invaders. The City Hall calls on Lviv residents and guests to join the city’s farewell ceremonies and to refrain from entertaining events and celebrations during this time.
At 11:00 a.m., the funeral service of Mykhailo Ivanikiv, Roman Chaban, and Igor Marchenko will begin, and at 11:30 a city farewell ceremony will take place on Rynok Square. Heroes will be buried at the Lychakiv cemetery.
At 14:00, the city farewell ceremony for Dmytro Fialka will begin. The Hero will be buried in the Yaniv cemetery in the Jewish section according to Jewish tradition. The family asks not to buy artificial wreaths and fresh flowers, because according to their tradition, only dried flowers are suitable.
Biographical references of Heroes
Dmytro Fialka (“Thorn”) (June 21, 1983-September 1, 2022). Born and raised in Lviv.
He studied at secondary comprehensive school No. 61. At the age of fifteen, he moved to Israel. There he completed his studies and mastered the profession of a football coach. He served in the ranks of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), where he gained combat experience.
In 2015, he returned to Ukraine. He worked as a coach of FC Lviv. He was a real professional in his field.
With the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he volunteered to join the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps “Right Sector”. He was engaged in the selection of volunteers for the ranks of the newly formed battalion, was an instructor. Later he received the rank of platoon commander. According to his comrades, Dmytro Fialka “was a real commander and valued the lives of soldiers above all else.”
The Hero is survived by his grandmother, wife and two children in Lviv, and his mother and younger brother in Israel.
Mykhailo Ivanikiv (11.08.1981-09.10.2022). A native of Bolotnia village, Lviv region.
He studied at the Bolotnyan institution of general secondary education of the I-III degrees of the Peremyshlyan city council of the Lviv district of the Lviv region. He graduated from the State Educational Institution “Lviv Higher Vocational Polytechnic School”. After completing his studies, he served in the ranks of the 80th separate airborne assault brigade of the Airborne Assault Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Participated in the UN Temporary Mission in the Republic of Kosovo.
In peacetime, he worked as a construction worker in Ukraine and abroad. With the beginning of a full-scale invasion, he returned to the Motherland and joined the territorial defense.
He fought against the Russian occupiers in the ranks of the 125th separate territorial defense brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Mykhailo Ivanikiv is survived by his wife, two daughters, mother and two brothers.
Roman Chaban (10.10.1979-09.10.2022). A native of Lviv.
He studied at secondary comprehensive school of grades I-III No. 49 in the city of Lviv. Attended the karate section, later engaged in weightlifting. He graduated from the Lviv Vocational College of Construction, Architecture and Design, majoring in “Construction and Civil Engineering”, then continued his studies at the Lviv Polytechnic National University. He served in the military service in the Odesa region.
After completing his studies, he worked in the construction industry, designing residential and other buildings. In his spare time, he continued to actively engage in sports.
With the beginning of a full-scale invasion of Russia, he volunteered to defend the Motherland. Defended Ukraine in the ranks of the 125th separate territorial defense brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Roman Chaban is survived by his wife, two children, sister and mother.

Ihor Marchenko (September 5, 1972-October 16, 2022). A native of Lviv.
He graduated from Lviv Lyceum of the Lviv City Council. In 1989, he entered the Faculty of History of Ivan Franko Lviv National University. Between 1994 and 1996 he served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Odesa.
During the peacetime, he worked as a history teacher in one of the Lviv schools for several years. Subsequently, he engaged in entrepreneurial activities.
From the first day of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, he went to war as a volunteer. He resisted the Russian occupiers in the ranks of the 80th separate airborne assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Igor Marchenko is survived by his wife, two daughters, mother and sister.
