60 bison from Lopatyn subpopulation spotted in soybean field in Brody district

In the Brody district of Lviv region, a large herd of European bison, listed in Ukraine’s Red Book, was recently observed grazing in a soybean field that couldn’t be harvested on time due to poor weather conditions.

The herd, estimated at around 60 animals, belongs to the Lopatyn subpopulation — one of seven subpopulations of bison in Ukraine. This is the largest group, with a total of 129 individuals as of January 1, 2025. All animals live freely in the territory of the Small Polissia region.

The bison are under the care and monitoring of the Brody Forest District, a branch of the “Carpathian Forest Office” of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine.” This area was previously part of the hunting reserve “Styr.”

Due to the large number of animals, they naturally split into smaller herds. Just yesterday, locals reported seeing two smaller herds in the area of the Radekhiv Forest District, which is also managed by the “Carpathian Forest Office.”
