Ukraine will introduce the first scanning systems for inspecting railway wagons and containers.
At the request of the State Customs Service, the first scanning systems for inspecting railway wagons and containers have been delivered to Ukraine. This marks another step in the large-scale equipping of the border with technical means of customs control to effectively combat smuggling. Currently, design and construction work is underway to install the equipment with all safety measures. The scanners are expected to be operational in the second half of 2026.
The first of such scanning systems in Ukraine will be installed at the railway stations ‘Yahodyn’ and ‘Mostyska-2’ – key connection points with the Republic of Poland. They will operate 24/7, providing fully automated control with the ability for bidirectional scanning.
The use of such technologies allows for the inspection of rolling stock without interfering with the cargo and without halting logistics processes. This simultaneously increases the efficiency of customs control and preserves the speed of transport. The systems are categorized as non-intrusive control tools and enable verification of the actual contents of wagons against the shipping documents. The high resolution of the images allows for the detection of hidden inserts, particularly in the structural elements of wagons, which significantly enhances capabilities to combat smuggling, including tobacco products, narcotics, and other prohibited items.
An additional advantage is special software that automatically selects wagons for scanning and prevents the inspection of passenger wagons and locomotives.
