We are deeply saddened to announce that Roman Mykhailovych Dominiko, the former chief architect of the city of Truskavets and the builder of the resort, has passed away at the age of 90.
Roman Dominiko was born on January 14, 1935, in the city of Drohobych. He graduated from Drohobych Secondary School No. 1, later the Drohobych Oil Technical School, and the Lviv Polytechnic Institute. Roman Dominiko’s first employment record was made at the Drohobych Intercity Bureau of Technical Inventory, where he worked as an architect from 1960 to 1962. At this bureau, the young architect was involved in planning and development of the cities of Boryslav and Truskavets, as well as the urban-type settlements of Stebnyk, Medynichi, Skhidnytsia, Pidbuzh, and Dobromyl.
On the recommendation of the head of the Lviv Regional Department for Construction and Architecture, Roman Mykhailovych was appointed as the chief architect of the city of Truskavets. By decision of the Truskavets city executive committee on April 10, 1962, Roman Dominiko was confirmed in this position. He served as the chief architect of Truskavets for 33 years.
In 1963, work began on a new master plan for the resort’s prospective development, and the chief architect could not remain on the sidelines. He actively engaged in this creative process, while not neglecting administrative duties. Intensive work continued for two years.
In 1965, the development of the Master Plan for the resort city was completed, which provided for the expansion of the resort’s recreational base to 35 thousand places. The first phase of construction was planned until 1980 and was designed for 20 thousand vacationers.
The master plan successfully addressed complex tasks of functional zoning of the territory and the original integration of the historical radial-ring system of development into the modern planned structure.
In the sanatorium-resort zone – the main functional zone, a public center was located, in the architectural-spatial solution of which the natural and historical features of Truskavets were taken into account, as well as the sanatorium park where the high-rise sanatorium buildings were placed.
A unique architectural “necklace” with a diameter of 1 – 1.5 km was created, which frames the picturesque green plantations of the resort park, giving Truskavets the appearance of a modern resort.
In 1981, the group of architects who worked on the Master Plan was awarded the USSR Council of Ministers Prize. Among the laureates was Roman Dominiko – as a co-author of the master plan and builder of resort city facilities.
In 1995, Roman Mykhailovych Dominiko turned 60 years old, and he firmly decided to retire, although the city leadership tried to persuade him not to leave the position of chief architect.
From 1995 to 2009, he worked as the head of the technical department of the International Clinic of Rehabilitation Treatment of Professor Volodymyr Koziavkin.
With Roman Mykhailovych’s participation, the medical building, the rehabilitation building “Elita,” and the complex of the International Clinic, including the residential building, were built, which in 2005 was awarded the State Prize in the field of architecture.
Roman Dominiko contributed significantly to the development of Truskavets, shaping its face. We are saddened alongside the family of the deceased.
A memorial service for the bright memory of Roman Dominiko will be held today, November 18, at 19:00 in the chapel of the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin.
The funeral will take place tomorrow, November 19 (the time will be announced at the memorial service).
Eternal memory to the late Roman Dominiko and Heavenly Kingdom, and our sincere condolences to his family…
