New museum opened in Lviv

A museum of the legendary Ukrainian artist, researcher of Ukrainian history and ethnography Volodymyr Patyk has been opened in Lviv at 4 Mateika Street.

The museum covers an area of over 200 square metres. It features a large collection of his works, including his most famous paintings, as well as little-known sketches and personal artefacts. They were donated to the museum by the artist’s wife. Visitors will be able to trace the development of his style – from early experiments to already established and recognised works.

“This is a new luxurious museum in an old nineteenth-century villa. Vladimir Patik was a very multifaceted figure, which visitors will be able to discover in this museum. He left us a wonderful artistic legacy, which is a wonderful optic of how to see this world. As the curator of this exhibition, I was extremely pleased to discover Patyk’s personality, his irony, and his worldview for myself and for visitors. It is very important that we are now passing on his legacy to the next generations, so his work will live on,” said Pavlo Hudimov, curator of the Patyk Museum exhibition, founder of Ya Gallery Lviv.

Volodymyr Patyk is a People’s Artist of Ukraine, Honorary Citizen of Lviv, a representative of the Galician school of painting, one of the most prominent artists in Ukrainian painting of the second half of the twentieth century. Back in the days of the Soviet totalitarian regime, he formed a new style in Ukrainian painting, leaving an extremely vivid mark on the national culture.

The artist is the author of the murals in the foyer of the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Cinema in Lviv and a panoramic painting for the Lviv Historical Museum (Museum of Arms). Volodymyr Patyk also created the famous Sea and Fish mosaic, which was destroyed by the developer in 2019 during the reconstruction of the Ocean store. The city subsequently ordered the company to admit its guilt, and in 2020 the destroyed composition was restored.
