The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance has prepared a list of names of settlements that contain symbols of Russian imperial policy in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Toponymy.”
This was reported in the Chervonograd City Council.
The city of Chervonograd was included in this list.
By January 27, 2024, local authorities must submit to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine their name proposals for those settlements that are subject to renaming in accordance with the law.
– The city of Chervonograd will be renamed by the Verkhovna Rada in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Condemnation and Prohibition of the Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Toponymy”, said Deputy Mayor of Chervonograd Taras Tyrko. – We cannot keep the old name, and it does not depend on the wishes of the residents of Chervonograd, nor on the deputies of the Chervonograd City Council. The name will definitely be changed, says Taras Tyrko.
What can we influence?
According to the law, we can propose a new name for the city of Chervonograd. In the event that the community does not reach an agreement on the new name of the city, and the local deputies do not vote for the corresponding proposal, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will make a decision on renaming based on the recommendation of the Institute of National Remembrance.
Our task is to decide on a new name for the city. This process will take place as follows. After the deputies at the session vote on the composition and procedure of the working group, we will launch a process of public consultation. These consultations will take place in two stages. These will be online and offline consultations on name options. First of all, these are public hearings in the People’s House, where everyone can come and offer their options for a new name for the city of Chervonograd. The commission will keep a record of these hearings.
There will also be electronic consultations held on the EDEM platform. There is already a corresponding section on the website of the city council. We will spread the link to the e-Democracy Platform itself through the media. By logging into this platform, residents will also be able to submit their options for a new name for our city. Options that will be collected using the EDEM platform, as well as those that will be voiced at public hearings, will be processed by the commission and submitted to an electronic non-voting. Based on the results of consultations and voting, the working group will recommend several options for renaming the city to the deputies of the Chervonograd City Council. Which of the options the deputies choose will be submitted as a proposal from our community to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
Consultations with the public will continue throughout the month
Next, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine must make a decision on renaming the settlement within three months. In the event that proposals for renaming settlements and districts, the names of which contain symbols of Russian imperial policy, are not submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine within the prescribed period, the decision on renaming such settlements will be made by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the basis of the recommendation of the Institute of National Remembrance .
