Lviv is moving into the next stage of work on the development concept for Northern Lviv. The city, together with specialists, is working through the proposals and comments that residents submitted during public consultations and discussions.
The progress of the process was reported by the acting head of the Spatial Planning Division of the Department of Architecture and Spatial Development of Lviv City Council, Maryna Peleshchak. According to her, over the past two months a significant number of ideas and comments have been received, which are now being systematised and analysed.
“Over the past two months we have received a large number of ideas, proposals and comments from residents. The city, together with specialists, is working through all submissions in order to form a single vision based on the best work of the teams, expert recommendations and residents’ feedback. This requires more time, so the work will continue for a few more months,” said Maryna Peleshchak.
Once this work is completed, a single vision for the development of the northern part of Lviv will be formed. It will be presented separately to residents, and the format and date of the presentation will be announced additionally.
To ensure the openness of the process, the city has published the materials of five development concepts for Northern Lviv in extended form. These are the same projects that were shown during the public consultations, but now anyone interested, including the professional community, can familiarise themselves with them.
The materials are available on the project website, as well as at an exhibition in the Bandinelli Palace at 2 Rynok Sq. The exhibition will run from 30 June to 7 July, opening hours: on weekdays from 11:00 to 19:00, at weekends from 10:00 to 18:00. The project website also publishes a public participation report with a profile of participants and feedback collected during the event.
In March, residents were presented with five options for the development of the Northern Lviv area and public consultations were held. More than 200 participants took part in the discussion. On the day of the event alone, over 100 written feedback forms were collected, and proposals and comments continue to come in.
In the 1960s, Lviv planned to build a new district called Northern Lviv, but this idea was never implemented. Today this area is being considered as a space for creating a modern district based on European approaches to urban planning.
International and Ukrainian specialists are working on possible development scenarios. Five architectural teams from Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Kyiv and Lviv are involved in the test planning. The process is organised by the cities of Lviv and Zurich, the Canton of Zurich, Swiss Network with Ukraine, the planning office ONplan and “Studio Zmist”.
The total area under consideration is about 690 hectares, of which roughly half is already occupied by established urban development. The remainder is seen as the potential for the further development of Northern Lviv.
