In spring, the number of fires in Ukraine’s ecosystems increases, with the main cause being the unauthorised burning of dry grass and leaves. Such practices, warn rescue services, are dangerous for the environment and human health, posing a risk of widespread blazes.
During combustion, hazardous substances such as carbon monoxide and dioxins are released into the air. This is particularly harmful to children, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic illnesses. Additionally, fire destroys beneficial microorganisms in the soil, disrupting nature.
In Ukraine, burning dry grass is prohibited. According to Article 77-1 of the Ukrainian Code of Administrative Offences, fines are stipulated: for citizens from 3,060 to 6,120 UAH, and for officials – from 15,300 to 21,420 UAH. Breaches of fire safety regulations in forests (Article 77 of the Code of Administrative Offences of Ukraine) are also punishable by fines.
Consequently, residents are urged not to burn organic waste but to compost it or dispose of it in an approved manner.
