In Lviv region, forestry officials charged over illegal felling of more than 20,000 trees

In Lviv region, law enforcement officers have notified officials of the Skole subsidiary forestry enterprise “Halsillis” that they are under suspicion over the organisation of large-scale illegal logging in the Carpathian forests. This was reported by the National Police of Ukraine.

According to the investigation, during 2019–2023 in the Stryi district, officials of this forestry enterprise issued official permits – logging tickets – for the felling of so-called “sparse forest”.

Police note that Ukrainian legislation does not provide for this type of logging. Despite this, the carrying out of these works was approved and included in the forest management planning projects, which in effect legalised the large-scale destruction of the forest.

As a result of these actions, more than 20,000 trees were destroyed in the Stryi district, and the amount of damage caused, according to preliminary estimates, reached 112 million hryvnias.

Police investigators are continuing the investigation; the enterprise’s officials have been notified that they are under suspicion of involvement in the illegal logging.
