At the end of last week, criminals arbitrarily cut down 4 young trees planted on the renovated Kotlyarska Street. Therefore, the city turned to law enforcement agencies to investigate this case and bring the culprits to justice. According to Oleksandra Sladkova, head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources, new trees will be planted in place of the cut down plane trees.

“Kotlyarska Street was completely reconstructed 5 years ago, with a complete replacement of networks and landscaping. Then the residents chose what kind of trees they wanted to see. Some of them only wanted sakura because they are popular and beautiful. But there is only one nuance – they are very small. Other residents, on the contrary, wanted bigger trees. Accordingly, we found a compromise: we planted 4 sycamores, which grow large enough, and the rest – cherry blossoms.
Everything was fine, until last week, on Saturday night, two men took a saw and cut down exactly those 4 sycamores. We believe that this is a major act of vandalism. Without a doubt, we will replace them with new trees. I would like to find and punish those who did this, because it is not only about the value of the sapling, which was actually not cheap, but also about the 5 years during which these trees were cared for and developed well. By the way, the trees were in perfect condition and took root well, so we are very sorry,” said the head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources Oleksandra Sladkova.
This year, they plan to plant other trees of large species in place of the felled sycamores. Instead, the Galician district administration turned to the police regarding the felled plane trees.
“In the spring, we will replace the felled sycamore trees with new trees, also of large species – of equivalent height and crown. The greater the mass of leaves of a tree, the more it “works” like a tree: it cools the air, creates shade and produces oxygen. Ornamental trees, such as cherry trees, cannot provide such functions.
We are pleased that many people have already responded and volunteered to join the landing,” Oleksandra Sladkova added.
