Former customs inspector to stand trial in Lviv for killing serviceman

In Lviv, an indictment has been submitted to court against a 34-year-old former inspector of Lviv Customs, who is accused of the premeditated murder of a serviceman. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, in early April this year, in the area of Patona Street in Lviv, a 52-year-old serviceman, formerly a well-known luger, died from a wound. On that day, servicemen of the Halytskyi-Frankivskyi District Territorial Centre for Recruitment and Social Support together with police officers were checking documents and carrying out notification measures near one of the funeral service shops.

During the interaction between the notification group and those present, an argument broke out. In the course of the verbal conflict, the 28-year-old brother of the customs officer tried to leave the scene, and the serviceman attempted to stop him. Then, according to the investigation, the relative of the man trying to flee, attempting to prevent this, took an object resembling a knife from a chest bag and ran after the serviceman.

Catching up with the victim, the attacker deliberately struck him in the chest. When he realised that the body armour was blocking the blows, he next struck him in the neck. The wound proved fatal, the carotid artery was damaged, and despite the efforts of medics the man died.

After the incident, the 34-year-old suspect and his brother left the scene by car. Thanks to the coordinated work of criminal police operatives, investigators, patrol officers and staff of other police units in the Lviv region, he was quickly located and detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The pre-trial investigation was conducted by the Territorial Office of the State Bureau of Investigation based in the city of Lviv.

The former customs inspector is charged with the premeditated murder of a person in connection with the performance of his official duty (para. 8 part 2 Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). He is currently in custody. In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime until his guilt is proven in the manner prescribed by law and established by a guilty verdict of the court.
