
In the Lviv region over the past day there were two road traffic accidents involving motorcyclists – in Sokal and the village of Zahirya. As a result of the crashes, three people were injured; in both cases the police have opened criminal proceedings, the Lviv regional police reported.
The first accident occurred on 31 May at about 01:40 on Chornovola Street in the town of Sokal, Sheptytskyi district. The driver of a Tekken motorcycle, a 21-year-old local resident, lost control and ran off the carriageway. The motorcycle passenger, an 18-year-old resident of Sheptytskyi district, sustained bodily injuries and was taken to hospital.
Law enforcement officers established that the motorcycle driver was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Investigators of Police Station No. 2 of the Sheptytskyi District Police Department have launched criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of road safety rules or the operation of transport by persons driving vehicles while intoxicated). The article provides for a penalty of up to three years' imprisonment with disqualification from driving vehicles for a period of three to five years.
Another crash occurred the same day at about 21:30 in the village of Zahirya, Lviv district. According to preliminary information, the driver of a Lifan JR 200 motorcycle, a 19-year-old Lviv resident, failed to control the vehicle, drove onto the roadside, where the vehicle overturned. Both the driver and his passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Zakarpattia region, sustained bodily injuries and were taken to hospital.
Investigators of Police Station No. 3 of Lviv District Police Department No. 2 have opened criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of road safety rules). The maximum penalty under this article is up to three years' restriction of liberty with disqualification from driving vehicles for up to three years. Law enforcement officers are establishing the circumstances of both accidents.
