Destroyed buildings on Brativ Mikhnovskykh Street in Lviv being demolished — public space to replace them

Demolition has begun on several residential buildings in Lviv’s Brativ Mikhnovskykh Street that were critically damaged during a Russian missile strike on September 4, 2024.

According to expert assessments, the buildings at numbers 37, 38, and 40a are beyond repair. The city has therefore decided to replace them with a newly designed public space.

The city, in collaboration with affected residents, provided compensation for lost property. A total of 30 co-owners of 20 apartments received 48.4 million UAH from the city budget to purchase new housing. In addition, the city covered temporary rental housing costs. Demolition work started with building No. 38 and is funded by non-budgetary sources. The future public space will include landscaping, benches, and recreational areas, designed by the Institute of Spatial Development.

Following the same September 4 attack, 60 buildings in the Zaliznychnyi district were damaged. District head Ihor Savka noted that immediate emergency repairs were carried out, followed by long-term renovations funded by the city and charitable partners under the “Adopt a Building” initiative. The compensation model was developed jointly with residents, with Lviv’s City Council approving the payout formula based on square meter calculations.

Among those affected was pensioner Oleksandr Boiko, who initially lived in a modular shelter and later in a hospice funded by the city. His brother reported that they received enough compensation to buy a similar one-room apartment on Olena Stepanivna Street.

Victor Stabrovskyi’s parents, also residents of the destroyed buildings, bought a new home on Zaliznychna Street. His disabled father narrowly survived the strike, saved by the layout of their apartment and the placement of drywall. The new apartment is in better condition, and funds remain for necessary renovations to make it accessible.

The September 4, 2024, Russian attack killed 8 people in Lviv, including one child, and injured 71 others (10 of them children). A total of 189 buildings were damaged. The city provided financial aid to repair damage and offered rental compensation for displaced residents.
