The State Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, located at 18 Teatralna Street, was one of the first to agree to participate in the city’s programme to support the implementation of barrier-free accessibility in cultural institutions located in the Lviv city territorial community.
The working group, led by Iryna Maruniak, the Lviv City Council’s Commissioner for Accessibility, examined the museum’s premises for inclusivity and helped repair the lift, which had not been working since 2017. Now people with limited mobility can see all the museum’s exhibitions on the second and third floors.
“In order to ensure accessibility in the Natural History Museum, a ramp was installed at the entrance. We have checked it – it is in compliance with the regulations. The only thing that needs to be fixed is the railing. The entrance doors to the museum need to be redesigned, because they are less than 90 cm wide.
And then there is a lift in the museum lobby. This lift allows people in wheelchairs and people with limited mobility to go up to the second and third floors of the museum, where there are very interesting exhibitions. Unfortunately, according to the head of the museum, this lift has not been working since 2017. Therefore, I instructed our Lvovsvitlo utility company to inspect the lift and help restore its operation. On Tuesday, 1 October, our specialists inspected the lift and were able to put it into operation. The lift is now in operation. So all those with reduced mobility can take the lift to any floor of the museum to see all its exhibitions. And it is very important and valuable that cultural institutions – museums, libraries, theatres – are accessible to people with limited mobility. This is what we are working for,” said Iryna Maruniak, Lviv City Council Commissioner for Accessibility.
According to her, the working group also inspected the Lviv Regional Library for Youth on Rynok Square. Rynok Square and provided its recommendations on what work needs to be done to make the library accessible to all readers.
On 4 July this year, the Lviv City Council approved a programme to support the implementation of barrier-free access to cultural institutions located in the Lviv city territorial community. This includes museums, theatres, concert organisations and other cultural institutions of state and municipal ownership, regardless of the type of subordination.
An important condition for providing assistance is co-financing: the city can provide funds for accessibility elements up to 50% of the total cost of a project or type of work.
