This summer, the square in front of the Dovzhenko Centre in Lviv’s Sykhiv district is to be tidied up, with a new flowerbed created in the central part of the space. According to the Sykhiv District Administration, this should make the square better maintained and more convenient for local residents.
According to representatives of the administration, the square in front of the Dovzhenko Centre is one of Sykhiv’s most visited locations. For now, only basic improvements are planned: repairs to the pavements, refurbishment of a neglected area and the creation of a flowerbed on the site of an old technical structure.
The Sykhiv District Administration notes that as far back as 2019 a large-scale project for the redevelopment of the square and adjacent park was drawn up. It envisages a multifunctional public space with an innovative fountain, inclusive zones, new greenery and fully barrier-free access. Work on this project was due to start in 2020, but was first postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and later due to the full-scale war.
Today, bringing such an ambitious vision to life requires substantial funding, while the city is directing resources first and foremost to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine and critically important needs. Therefore, the major overhaul of the park and square, including the construction of a real fountain, is planned for after the end of the war. The current works are seen as a temporary solution that will not hinder the future implementation of the full project.
The administration also clarifies that the structure in the middle of the square, which residents often mistakenly refer to as the ‘old fountain’, has in fact never been a fountain and was never intended to be one. It is an air recuperator – a technical element of the ventilation system designed to serve the Dovzhenko Centre building. The system never came into operation, and over the years the structure itself has become neglected and hazardous. The new flowerbed is intended to provide a green focal point for the space and make the area more pleasant for residents to walk and relax.
The exact start date for the tidying up of the area and the creation of the flowerbed on the square in front of the Dovzhenko Centre in Lviv will be announced separately.
