For the first time in Lviv, Casselian curbs are being installed

For the first time in Lviv, Casselian curbs are being installed: a barrier-free space is being arranged at the bus stop at 39-41 Chornovil Ave.

Lviv is arranging barrier-free and accessible space at public transport stops. In particular, repair work is currently underway at 39-41 Chornovil Ave. For the first time in Lviv, Cassel curbs are being installed here, which allow public transport to approach the bus stop platform as close as possible, and thus provide comfortable boarding and disembarking for passengers.

“Due to the war, the number of people with disabilities and various injuries is increasing. Therefore, we have to ensure accessibility and inclusiveness in all spheres of life, including accessibility of public transport stops.

For example, we are currently working on making the bus stop at 39-41 Chornovola Ave. accessible. This stop was not chosen by chance. It is one of the largest stops in the city. It is 45 meters long and 20 public bus routes and 1 trolleybus route stop here.

Therefore, a new bus stop platform will be arranged here, where tactile tiles will be laid – guide and warning tiles, and sidewalks will be paved on both sides to make the approaches to the bus stop barrier-free. But the peculiarity of the work is that for the first time in Lviv, Kassel curbs will be installed here. The height of such a curb is 21 cm. They are spherical in shape, and therefore allow public transport to get as close as possible to the bus stop platform. As a result, passengers will be able to get on and off the transport conveniently.

Such curbs are installed in many European cities. They were first used there in 1996 in Kassel (Germany),” said Iryna Maruniak, Lviv City Council Commissioner for Accessibility;

Repair work at the bus stop at 39-41 Chornovola Ave. began on July 29. For the duration of the works, trolleybuses and buses will temporarily board and disembark passengers faster – approximately 30 meters before the existing stop.

“We have already dismantled the existing pavement, arranged the road trough, road base, installed drainage trays, arranged a raised boarding platform and partially laid a new pavement.

The works are quite extensive, costing almost UAH 950 thousand. At the investor’s expense, we will install two modern pavilions here,” added Viktor Dubinyak, head of the communal services department of the Halychyna district administration.

According to him, if weather conditions allow, the work will be completed by the end of this month. Although it is planned that they should last for 2 months – that is, until the end of September.

As a reminder, almost 75% of bus stops in Lviv are currently accessible or partially accessible to people with limited mobility.

According to the district administrations, since the beginning of the year, public transport stops have been made accessible on Zelena Street near the AS-5, 10 Chukarina Street, 45 and 67 Medova Pechera Street, 32 Vyhovskoho Street, 113 Shevchenka Street, 113 Bryukhovychi Street (Ryasne-1), Shevchenka-Kovcha Street, and Independence of Ukraine Street in Bryukhovychi, among others.

And as of now, repair work is underway to arrange a barrier-free space at the tram stop on Soborna Square.
