A reconstruction project has begun in the city of Sokal, Lviv Region, on Andrey Sheptytsky Street, directly across from the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. The project involves the transformation of the area into a commemorative space featuring a Memorial honoring fallen Ukrainian heroes.
The site is divided into two main zones: one designated for the Memorial itself, showcasing portraits of the fallen soldiers, and the other intended for visitors and worshippers to pay their respects. Additional lighting will be installed to enhance visibility, and all elements of the memorial will be illuminated. For better pedestrian access, a ramp will be built, and a new pedestrian crossing will be arranged. Lowered curbs and tactile paving will be added at road intersections to facilitate movement for individuals with disabilities.
The design documentation has passed expert evaluation. Planned landscaping and improvement works include:
- removal of 12 trees and stumps,
- dismantling of the “Heavenly Hundred” metal structure and old fencing,
- installation of benches and waste bins,
- lawn seeding on undeveloped areas,
- paving of pedestrian paths and platforms,
- directing surface water to lower relief areas.
The architectural concept honors the memory of Ukrainian defenders who gave their lives for independence and freedom. The Memorial will consist of 20 monolithic pylons of varying heights, each bearing the Coat of Arms of Ukraine, a Shield, and photos of the fallen.
The structure will use black marble, red granite, and gray concrete, reflecting a color palette of black, red, and gray. The surrounding area will be paved with gray concrete tiles, with curbstones reinforcing the path edges.
Accessibility is ensured through:
- regulated slopes of walking paths,
- lowered curbs,
- non-slip paving materials.
All pylons, shield, and coat of arms will be built on strip monolithic reinforced concrete foundations. The same material will be used for the ramp’s retaining wall and exterior stairs. The ramp will be equipped with metal railings for safety.
The procurement for the project, classified under the national code DK 021:2015 — 45454000-4 (Reconstruction), was announced three times starting July 24, 2025. The third tender, from November 24, 2025, resulted in a contract with PP “MP SANTEHMONTAZH” to carry out the work, with a total project cost of UAH 2,248,183.
Construction is scheduled from December 2025 to December 2026. Preparatory activities have already started, including the removal of 12 trees, stump extraction, and dismantling of the “Heavenly Hundred” structure and the surrounding fence.
