In Stryi, eight families who had been living for more than two decades in a building at 4 Shevchenka Street have finally been able to formally register ownership of their flats. These homes were once used as a so-called “transit point” for employees of local municipal utilities.
People were moved in here more than 20 years ago, when they worked for the city’s municipal enterprises. After those enterprises were reorganised or liquidated, the residents were left without proper housing documents and in effect lived there without a clearly defined legal status.
For many years, the families tried on their own to have their right to the flats recognised, but without success. Progress was only made once lawyers from Stryi City Council became involved. They established the fact of the residents’ long-term occupation of these homes, the lawfulness of their initial settlement there, and then pursued court proceedings that lasted around two years.
As a result of the court cases, the residents’ right to live in and privatise the flats was recognised. After all legal procedures were completed, the Mayor, Oleh Kanivets, officially handed the residents the decision on the formalisation, registration and issuance of ownership rights to their homes.
Thus, eight families, after years of hardship, have obtained the legal right to their own flats in the building at 4 Shevchenka Street in Stryi.
