14-year-old Anna from the Lviv district faced dangerous complications from acute otitis, including meningitis and sepsis, which infected the deep structures at the base of her skull. This posed a life-threatening danger, but the coordinated efforts of the medical team at the Ohmatdyt hospital saved her life.
Anna, who has Type 1 diabetes, was admitted to the hospital with initial symptoms of otitis: ear pain, high fever, and elevated blood sugar levels. Despite initial suspicions of an allergic reaction, the rapid deterioration of her condition revealed the need for urgent medical intervention.
The medical team played a crucial role in her treatment, including otolaryngologists, pulmonologists, anaesthesiologists, and other specialists, who performed a successful operation to remove the primary infection site in the middle ear. Surgical intervention and intensive antibacterial therapy helped stabilise her condition.
Although Anna is already experiencing significant improvement, there are lingering neurological symptoms, such as limited eye movement. She will undergo further treatment at the Western Ukrainian specialised centre.
Anna’s story is a reminder of how a common ear infection can be life-threatening, but also of the importance of quality diagnosis and professional medical care.
