Lviv has become a platform for the development of spinal surgery, thanks to Isador Lieberman, a world-renowned surgeon from the USA. Doctors have arrived at St. Nicholas Hospital to assist and train Ukrainian physicians.
In total, over 300 patients have applied for free surgeries. Priority treatment will be given to the 8 most severe cases. The surgeries are conducted with the participation of a professional international team.
The medical supplies, including metal structures and instruments, were brought by the team independently, allowing patients to receive them at no cost. The surgical team utilises the latest tools, including an ultrasonic surgical instrument provided by Tay Hensley, and haemostatic glue from Ivanna Onufriychuk.
Isador Lieberman noted that the mission’s goal is to support Ukrainian doctors in the development of spinal surgery. “We aim to create a programme that will enable doctors to independently handle complex cases,” he explained.
Zoryana Ivanyuk, deputy director of the CF ‘Christian Medical Association of Ukraine’, highlighted the challenging situation in Ukraine, particularly due to the war. “Most centres have limited capabilities, complicating access to treatment,” she noted.
Lieberman’s mission is seen as the beginning of future long-term support, providing hospitals with the skills and the ability to independently carry out complex spinal surgeries in the future.
