For the fifth consecutive year, the Transplantation Centre of the First Medical Association of Lviv is the leader in the number of transplants in Ukraine. This means hundreds of lives saved through organ transplants. In the first three months of this year, 43 transplants were performed here.
The Centre transplanted 26 kidneys, 10 livers, and 7 hearts. The top three medical institutions also include the National Scientific Centre for Surgery and Transplantology named after O. O. Shalimov with 23 transplants and medical institutions in Kyiv with 20 operations.
“Overall, 159 transplants have been performed in Ukraine over three months, which is 15% more than last year. About 70% of the operations were made possible through posthumous donation. We honour the memory of each donor and express our sincere condolences to their families. It is thanks to your decision that hundreds of lives have been saved. Thank you. Special thanks to colleagues across the country — more and more centres are starting to perform transplants. This is a chance for life for those who have almost lost hope,” notes Maksym Ovechko, head of the Transplantation Centre of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
As of today, there are 3,957 patients on the national waiting list for organ transplants: 2,389 need a kidney transplant, 734 a heart, 739 a liver, 57 lungs, 4 a “heart-lung” complex, 16 a “kidney-pancreas”, 5 a “heart-liver”, and 1 a “liver-heart”.
“Every transplant is a chance. And our team works to ensure there are more happy rescue stories,” adds Maksym Ovechko.
