In Lviv, a unique operation was performed on 13-year-old Maria Momot from Kharkiv: the girl received a kidney from her father and a part of her mother’s liver. This was made possible thanks to the efforts of the doctors at the Transplant Centre of the First Medical Association of Lviv and their colleagues from the Shalimov Institute.
Maria was born with the rare Caroli syndrome and polycystic kidney disease, which caused serious health problems. The first operation was a kidney transplant, performed by Lviv transplant surgeons. However, due to complications, the girl required another operation — a liver transplant.
Maria’s mother became the liver donor, and the operation was conducted with the participation of specialists from Kyiv. The head of the transplant department at the Shalimov Institute, Oleksandr Grynenko, noted that such operations require a high level of technical skill.
The postoperative period was challenging, but Maria managed to overcome it. She even made bracelets for the doctors, who promised to remove them when the girl fully recovers. Maria has now been discharged from the hospital and is returning to her native Kharkiv.
The Transplant Centre of the First Medical Association of Lviv has been a leader in the number of transplants in Ukraine for five years, saving hundreds of lives.
