In Lviv, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Apostolic Visit of Pope John Paul II to Ukraine, a commemorative information plaque will be installed at 5 St George’s Square. The corresponding decision was taken at a meeting of the executive committee.
The metal plaque, in a bronze colour, will feature an image of Pope John Paul II at the moment he is blessing the people. It will also carry an information note about the Pope’s visit to Ukraine, in Ukrainian and English.
The plaque will be one of the events to commemorate the historic visit of the Pontiff to Lviv, which took place in June 2001. A series of events dedicated to the 25th anniversary of this visit has been planned in the city this year.
To prepare and hold the events, the mayor has set up an organising committee that includes representatives of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Roman Catholic Churches. During the commemorative events, particular attention will be paid to the significance of Pope John Paul II’s visit for the history of Ukraine and Lviv.
“We will be recalling this historic visit and focusing on its significance for the history of Ukraine. The key events will fall on the days when Pope John Paul II was in Ukraine,” the official noted.
The Apostolic Visit of Pope John Paul II to Ukraine took place from 25 to 27 June 2001. While in Lviv, the Pontiff presided over services attended by hundreds of thousands of faithful and carried out the beatification of the new martyrs of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
