The Staryi Sambir and Khyriv communities have received new equipment to combat Sosnowsky’s hogweed. This is a dangerous invasive plant that harms the environment and complicates the use of agricultural land. The communities received tractors, ploughs, and mowers as part of an international project to protect the biodiversity of the cross-border territories of Ukraine and Poland.
The aim of the project is to halt the spread of hogweed and help communities work more effectively with affected areas. The equipment received will allow for the mechanical destruction of the plant, processing of large areas, and systematic control of the situation on the land. Thanks to this, communities will be able to return land to use more quickly and increase its productivity.
“This is part of a systematic effort in the field of environmental safety and effective land use. It is important that the region has joined in co-financing: 10% of the project budget is provided from the regional budget and community funds,” noted Lyudmyla Honcharenko, Director of the Department of Agro-Industrial Development of the Lviv Regional State Administration. The project is being implemented under the Interreg NEXT “Poland–Ukraine 2021–2027” programme in partnership with Ukrainian and Polish institutions.
