Uber launches Driving Insights panel to assess driving style

The Uber service has announced the launch of a new Driving Insights panel, which helps drivers track their own driving style and improve trip safety. The tool was created in partnership with Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), a company specialising in telematics and safe driving analytics.

Driving Insights provides drivers with an overall driving score, shows how they compare with other drivers in their region, and highlights key trends and areas for improvement. Based on these data, the service offers tips for a safer driving style.

Drivers can view their score and statistics in the Profile Hub in the Driver app. To do this, they need to open the menu, tap their profile photo, after which the Driving Insights score will be displayed; tapping this score takes them to the detailed dashboard. If a user is both driving and delivering, they should then select the Rides section to view their driving rating.

According to Uber, CMT uses smartphone sensors to analyse a range of driving behaviour parameters: speeding, harsh braking, rapid acceleration, sharp turns and phone handling during a trip. Based on these indicators, an individual score and a detailed dashboard are generated.

In the Driving Insights panel, drivers can see which aspects of their driving are stronger and which need attention, as well as receive recommendations on how to improve their habits behind the wheel. It is noted that safer driving has a positive impact on passenger comfort and overall road safety.

The link between the driving score and the Uber Pro programme is also explained separately. In cities where Uber Pro status depends on the Driving Insights score, a minimum score of 75 is required for Gold level, and 85 for Platinum and Diamond levels. According to Uber, the vast majority of drivers already have a score above 75.

Cambridge Mobile Telematics offers several basic tips for improving Driving Insights results: adhere to permitted speed limits and move with the flow of traffic, increase the distance to the vehicle ahead to avoid harsh braking, use a phone holder to minimise touching the phone while driving, accelerate smoothly without rapid bursts of speed, and take corners at a steady, moderate speed.
