Mykola Khanas from Stryi has passed away

At the age of 70, after a long illness, Mykola Khanas, a renowned scout, traveller, and public figure from Stryi, has passed away. He was born on 1 December 1956 in the village of Hayakh-Verkhni on the Drohobych region. Although he was educated as an electrical installer, his heart always yearned for special achievements.

In 1988, together with like-minded individuals, he secretly erected a cross on the grave of NKVD victims, and the following year he led the Ukrainian language society named after T. Shevchenko at Vocational School No. 16. In 1990, he became the first head of the Stryi “Plast” and actively participated in its revival in Ukraine.

For 27 years, he worked in the executive committee of the Stryi City Council. Until the end, he did not give up travelling and waited almost three years for his son Petro, who went missing in May 2023. He will be remembered as a cheerful and joyful person who loved his family, travels, God, and Ukraine above all.

Our sincere condolences to his wife Zena and daughter Olia. The Parastas will take place today, 9 April, at 18:00, and the funeral will be on 10 April at 13:00 at the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Stryi.
