According to an optimistic scenario, Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport may resume operations in April-May 2024. Other possible reopening dates include the summer months. Between five and seven airlines have already expressed their readiness to operate flights within a month after the airport’s reopening. The Ukrainian government is also considering restarting flights from Uzhhorod Airport.
This information was shared by Tatiana Romanovska, the airport’s general director.
Which Airlines Are Ready to Fly from Lviv?
Several airlines have already confirmed their interest in returning to Lviv once the airspace is reopened:
- Wizzair
- Air Baltic
- Turkish Airlines
- Sky Up
- Austrian Airlines
- Lufthansa
- LOT
According to Tatiana Romanovska, the initial focus will be on resuming regular flights. Charter services will likely be reintroduced by Sky Up, as the airline already operates a strong European route network. Representatives from these airlines have conducted preliminary audits, and once airspace reopening is officially approved, they are ready to resume operations within days.
Impact on Tourism
Currently, Ukrainian tour operators sell vacation packages with departures from Polish and EU airports. However, if Lviv Airport reopens, they are expected to quickly shift to local departures, as this would be more convenient and significantly cheaper for Ukrainian travelers.
“We hope the reopening happens in summer, when air traffic is at its peak due to vacations and long daylight hours. However, if the airport resumes operations as early as April or May, it would be fantastic news for us,” said Romanovska.
