History of the construction of the monument to Taras Shevchenko in Sokal

In April 1991, the creators of the future monument to Taras Shevchenko, sculptor E.P. Mysko and architect V.V. Kamenshchyk, arrived in Sokal.

The artists determined the height of the monument, its pedestal, and its location based on the terrain.

The meeting with the creators of the monument was attended by the chairman of the committee for the construction of the monument I. Tymoshyk, the chairman of the city council Y. Stefanyshyn, the director of the Museum of the Spiritual Republic A. Pokotiuk, the chairman of the district council M. Pshevlotskyi, and many residents of Sokal.

In February 1993, molds for all parts of the sculpture of the Taras Shevchenko monument in Sokal were made at the Lviv Ceramic Factory.

And now (in 1993) it has already been cast in bronze. This is a difficult and painstaking work, because the sculpture is 2 meters 95 centimeters high, and there is hope that this year (1993) the people of Sokal will see the monument to Kobzar on the main street of the city.

But the fundraising continues, which is still so necessary to reconstruct the avenue where the monument to Taras Shevchenko will stand and to make improvements there.

The monument committee and the Board of the Prosvita Society are sincerely grateful to the donors: The state administration, which donated 400 thousand rubles, the collectives of the chemical fiber plant – 300 thousand, the Boroks distillery – 100 thousand, the Sokal meat enterprise, and small enterprises “Telephone” – 50 thousand, “Galicia – 30 thousand, district supply – 25 thousand, small enterprise “Original”, district communication center – 7 thousand, city council, “Torgservice”, small enterprise “Elegant”, feed mill – 5 thousand rubles.

Just like the history of human life, the history of the city consists not only of gray everyday life, but also of events that will be remembered by generations

“For the fourth time this year (1993), we celebrated our most important holiday, the Independence Day of our country.

But this year it was special. It was on this day that the monument to Taras Shevchenko was opened and consecrated in Sokal.

This monument is worthy of our genius, which many generations of Sokal residents have dreamed of. For during the years when we lived in the great Soviet empire, such majestic monuments were erected to the “leader of the proletarians” rather than to the great son of the Ukrainian people. What can we say about small towns, if in some regional centers there was not even a bust of Kobzar. Now, thanks to all of them, Taras is now cast in bronze in the center of Sokal.
