In Lviv, social advertising billboards have been put up to mark the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to the city. Using the QR code on them, residents and visitors to Lviv can access the detailed programme of events prepared for the jubilee.
One of the billboards, installed on Heroiv UPA Street, shows Pope John Paul II against the backdrop of Lviv’s well-known architectural landmarks. In the lower left-hand corner there is a large QR code for the programme of events, which, once scanned, provides the full list of activities.
The Chief of Staff of the Executive Committee of Lviv City Council, Yevhen Boyko, noted that the Pope’s visit is of great significance for the city. According to him, the Mayor of Lviv has set up an organising committee to prepare for the celebration of the anniversary, which includes representatives of religious denominations, regional and city authorities, as well as government officials. A city-wide visual identity has been developed specially for this occasion, and the social advertising will feature quotations from Saint Pope John Paul II. Boyko stressed that the funds for the billboards are non-budgetary and have been provided by local entrepreneurs.
Throughout June, Lviv is marking the 25th anniversary of the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to Ukraine. It was on 25–27 June 2001 that Lviv became the venue for one of the most important spiritual events in the history of independent Ukraine.
To mark the anniversary, the city has prepared almost a hundred spiritual, cultural, artistic and youth events. These include festive liturgies, film screenings, a cycling pilgrimage, the ‘Pope–Youth’ flashmob, photo exhibitions and the issuing and cancellation of a commemorative postage stamp.
