Peat Fire Near Sytikhiv Threatens Village

A fire has broken out in the area near Sytikhiv, engulfing approximately 5 hectares of peat. The fire has spread so extensively that the smoke threatens to approach the village. More than 10 units of equipment are working at the site to extinguish the fire.

Iryna Ohnysta reported that the agglomeration office in Dublyany, together with the Shevchenkiv District Administration, are seeking additional resources to assist the firefighters. The initial call was received by the Rescue Service “101” yesterday morning when the fire had already spread to dry grass and peat bogs.

Firefighters have successfully halted the spread of the fire in dry vegetation but continue to battle the peatland centres. According to community representatives, the cause was the prohibited practice of setting dry grass alight. Ukrainian legislation prohibits such actions as they lead to significant environmental damage.

Within the Lviv community, raids are being conducted to identify and stop the setting of dry grass on fire. Since the beginning of the year, 21 individuals have been held accountable with fines ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 hryvnias. Overall, fines for individuals range from 3,060 to 6,120 hryvnias, and for officials, from 15,000 hryvnias.
