How to Avoid Domestic Violence and What Legislative Changes are Provided
Practical advice from the Lviv police for victims of domestic violence. What to do to avoid becoming a victim of domestic violence, how to minimize its consequences, what liability is provided by law for committing domestic violence, and where victims should report.
If you have become a victim of domestic violence, immediately report it to the police: via the emergency line 102, at territorial units, or contact your local police officer/community police officer.
Don’t Tolerate
Research results show that most victims of physical violence have long allowed themselves to be verbally abused. Initially, the victim suffers from psychological violence, which later turns into physical violence. Do not allow yourself to be insulted or humiliated from the beginning of a relationship, and do not allow actions towards you that can lead to violence.
Evaluate the Situation Correctly
Family conflicts occur in the closed space of a home or apartment, where there is no possibility of external intervention. In case of a threat of conflict, you should leave home – conflict in the presence of others usually becomes less intense. If there is a threat of a conflict (and, as a consequence, violence), try to invite someone who will help reduce the tension, such as a relative.
Be Especially Cautious with Drunk Individuals
Domestic violence is often perpetrated by intoxicated individuals. In such a state, even normally non-confrontational people can become aggressive. If you see someone is intoxicated, do not engage in a confrontation, do not react to provocations, try to calm the person down, and do not make abrupt remarks. If the conflict cannot be stopped, try to leave the premise: move to another room, to neighbors, or outside.
The Abuser Must Know They Will Be Punished
A person who potentially might commit violent actions must know they will inevitably be punished. It is beneficial to post emergency service numbers: emergency medical services, police, etc., in a visible place. Among these numbers should be the contact for the local or community police officer, whom you can call in the case of domestic violence.
Regarding Punishment

The duration of administrative detention for persons who committed domestic violence, gender-based violence, or failed to comply with an urgent prohibition injunction, has been increased to twelve hours, when necessary to identify or clarify the circumstances of the offense.
