Court Orders ‘Forests of Ukraine’ to Protect ‘Terlivska’ Virgin Forest

Over 41 hectares of virgin forests in the Sambir district of Lviv region are to receive the necessary protection status thanks to a court ruling. A claim filed by the Sambir District Prosecutor’s Office against the SJSC ‘Forests of Ukraine’ has been upheld, obligating the company to officially establish the boundaries of the local nature monument ‘Terlivska’.

The protected area spans over 41 hectares and includes a beech and fir virgin forest aged between 91 and 135 years. Some trees reach 110 cm in diameter. From 2024, this area will become part of Ukraine’s nature reserve fund, yet as of now, the boundaries are not recorded in the land registry, hindering additional protection.

As a result of discovered violations, the prosecutor’s office intervened, and the court supported their arguments. The SJSC ‘Forests of Ukraine’ are now required to create the technical documentation to include the virgin forest in the land registry. Once the decision becomes legally binding, steps will be taken to ensure its prompt execution.
