According to the Lviv Regional Centre for Hydrometeorology of Ukraine, icy conditions are expected on the roads in Lviv region on 11-13 December.
Basic safety tips for drivers and pedestrians during icy conditions
For drivers
- Check the vehicle before driving:
- Ensure that the tyres have sufficient winter tread (minimum 4 mm).
- Clear snow and ice from the windscreen before driving.
- Check the brakes, battery and washer fluid level.
- Reduce speed:
- During icy conditions, drive below the speed limit.
- Avoid sudden manoeuvres and braking.
- Safe distance:
- Increase the distance to the vehicle in front by up to 2 to 3 times compared to normal conditions.
- Assess the situation on the road in advance.
- Driving is smooth and predictable:
- Start and brake as smoothly as possible.
- Use the engine to reduce speed by changing gears.
- Keep an eye on the roads:
- Avoid areas with a glossy sheen on the road (black ice).
- Avoid puddles where a thin layer of ice may be hiding.
- Use the “anti-slip” mode:
- Use low gears on slippery roads.
- If the vehicle has traction control (ESP/ESC), leave it on.
- Stopping tips:
- Start braking in advance using the intermittent method (jerk braking).
- If the vehicle slides, do not apply the brakes, but steer in the direction of the slide, gradually levelling the vehicle.
For pedestrians
- Choose the right footwear:
- Wear shoes with grooved soles that provide good traction.
- Avoid smooth soles (e.g. on leather shoes).
- Choose your route carefully:
- Walk only on cleared sidewalks and paths and avoid snowy or icy areas.
- Avoid areas with a glossy sheen of ice.
- Move carefully:
- Take short steps and keep your centre of gravity above your feet.
- When walking, bend your knees slightly to reduce the load of possible falls.
- Additional measures:
- Wear special anti-slip shoes (e.g. ice shoes).
- Carry a cane with a rubber tip or metal spike if you are an elderly person.
- Safe behaviour on the roads:
- Only cross the road in designated areas and only when the light is green.
- Remember that it takes longer for a car to brake on slippery roads.
- Avoid being in a hurry:
- Take your time and avoid sudden movements to avoid losing your balance.
- Be visible:
- In the evening and in the morning, wear reflective elements on your clothing so that drivers can see you in advance.
General advice for everyone
- Constantly monitor weather forecasts and the situation on the roads.
- Remember that the key is to be careful and attentive, whether you are driving or walking.
